First I just wanted to say that this is a superb litter box - works far better than those rack ones.
The motors are an extremely weak point. In the 6 years that we have owned this unit, we have had to replace the elevator motor at least once a year. More so the last couple of years. A big issue also I that they only ship replacement motors out of the US and they will only use UPS, so if you are Canadian you get hit with stupid UPS brokerage fees. Be nice if they would ship USPS. That being said, I am not sure why the motors keep failing - perhaps they die because of an heat issue as the elevator one seems to get fairly warm. I would rate this a lot higher except for the failing motor part :(

My first Simply Clean finally broke down beyond repair around Christmas after over 5 years of service. I searched for a replacement and not being able to find another Simply Clean in town, finally settled with a competitor's model in February. I had regrets after the first week. I thought my days of fecal disimpaction were behind me, but I was wrong. It jammed constantly and did not perform as advertised. After almost 2 months, I decided I had given it enough chance to impress. I cleaned it out and returned it to the store for a full refund! I have since purchased another Simply Clean. Its been running for a week without any issues. It took 60 seconds to change bags and pick up any circulating matter not yet on the conveyor - done! No jams, no missed targets, no gifts on the floor, no getting my fingers soiled with fumbling with awkward product specific bags, just happy cats and a happy pet-parent back into a normal routine. I would recommend the Simply Clean to anyone looking for a reliable, clean and environmentally friendly automated litter box at an affordable price. I won't make the same mistake again.

I've had my PetSafe self-cleaning litter box for several years. I've replaced both the base and escalator motors at least once and this because I truly like the product. The motor recently failed again. I decided to purchase a competitor's product as I couldn't find another PetSafe model anywhere and I wanted to try something different. My findings are based on the size of the litter box, the motor efficiency, size of the collection bin, liner bags and ease of regular and terminal clean-up (when you need to take it all apart and wash it clean).
While the competition has a larger rectangle litter box that can accommodate my larger cats, the unit cannot accommodate large amounts of clean granules. The mechanism frequently jams even when the collection bin isn't full and sometimes the rake sweeps above the urine balls that are stuck to the bottom of the tray. I have to check every day and release the jam. The wider sweep area requires a stronger motor to rake through and it would appear on this model, the motor is underpowered. The unit comes apart really easy as the motor and casing attaches to the side of the entire litter box and travels back and forth. This makes terminal cleaning much easier by comparison.
The competition's long and narrow collection bin doesn't lend itself well to using ordinary shopping bags and the company's liner bags are even more awkward to use. I've tried using regular shopping bags and they are actually easier but add bulk to the collection bin. In addition, if cats visit the litter box at the same spot, the collection bin fills at one spot fairly quickly as all the litter piles up in the same place. Again, I have to keep an eye on it daily and that defeats the purpose of a self-cleaning litter box.
The PetSafe model allows use of ordinary shopping bags making clean-up a breeze and reduces expenses. The deep collection bin allows for soiled litter to settle more evenly. I don't have to purchase special bags, I can recycle the ones I have and I've even considered lining the collection bin with bags made for composting. However, I doubt clumping litter is biodegradable to what would be the point? The litter box holds more clean litter than the competition and can operate for a longer period without supervision. I've left for several days without concern about litter backing-up and I have 4 cats, but I also had to put out a larger litter box for the two big cats. So the Petsafe box was not visited by as many cats as this newer box manufactured by the competition.
The PetSafe model has several shortfalls; 1) the size of the litter area is better suited for small to medium cats (under 13lbs) 2) the screw fasteners holding the escalator are frustrating terminal clean-ups and 3) the motors fail every couple of years.
In both cases, the appliance works with any standard clumping litter and this is a big factor in choosing a self-cleaning litter box. Despite the design considerations, I still prefer the PetSafe self-cleaning litter box to the competition and regret purchasing from another company. The ease of regular clean-up is far superior in the PetSafe model and after all, the objective to a self-cleaning box is to not have to check it on a daily basis. For this reason, I would recommend this product over the competition.
